Moccasin Making Workshop

  • Journey Museum & Learning Center 222 New York Street Rapid City, SD, 57701 United States (map)

Join us at the Journey Museum for a unique opportunity to learn about the artistry and history behind Lakota moccasins.  Master Oglala Lakota artists Mike and Tim Lammers will teach this special class, which is being offered for the first time. Participants will learn to design and make their very own soft soled plains moccasins.  All supplies will be provided, and participants will take home a finished pair of their own.

Moccasins are the typical footwear for Plains Indians, including Lakotas, as well as other Indigenous peoples across the United States. They were designed for a tribe’s specific environment such as hard-sole moccasins to protect the feet from prairie and desert environments. Soft-soled moccasins were common in eastern forests and were well-suited for travel through woodlands.  Students in this class will make a pair of soft-soled moccasins, which are widely used for dances and pow wows today.

The cost of the class is $80 for museum members and $100 for non-members.  This is a two-part class and attendance at both sessions is required.

Classes will be held on Thursday May 22nd and May 29th from 5:30-7:30 pm.

Children are welcome, although students under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.  Class size will is limited, so call (605)394-6923 to save a spot today.
