Step through our doors and embark on a journey through 2 billion years of history—connecting you with the people, cultures, and science behind the ancient Black Hills and prairies of Western South Dakota. It’s a journey rich with stories and traditions—from prehistoric encounters and Native American heritage to pioneer tales and spaceflight.

Each member of the family will delight in discovering a vast array of cultural artifacts and interactive experiences and leave with a connection to this unique and diverse place Lakotas fittingly called the “Island in the Plains.”

    Picturing The West

    Highlights From the Roseland Collection

    February 1st, 2025 – June 8th, 2025

    Picturing the West aims to capture the rugged spirit, resilience, and traditions of the American West. Through vivid imagery and dynamic compositions, these works celebrate the heritage and daily life of cowboys, ranchers, animals, and the landscapes they inhabit.

    Turtle Soup returns in 2025!

    Enjoy good stories, good food, and good company on select Fridays from noon to 1:00 pm in the Spring and Fall.

    Each Turtle Soup program will feature a presentation and include a featured soup from Fork Real Cafe.

    Speakers cover a broad range of intriguing topics, from Indigenous Feminism to Deadwood Archaeology.

  • --Youth Program--

    Family Education on Saturdays

    Join us for the new season of STEAM Saturdays for youth ages 6 - 13 on Saturdays starting this fall. Students will learn exciting topics pertaining to Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math with hands on activities.

    Programs are FREE to museum members and included with admission for non-members.

    Where Eagles Soar

    The Story of Billy Mills Told Through the Artwork of SD Nelson

    October 11th, 2024 - May 18th, 2025

    Come see the legendary story of Billy Mills, Lakota Olympic Gold Medalist, with featured illustrations from his new book, Wings of an Eagle. Artwork created by SD Nelson and on display in the Adelstein Gallery.
