Donald Montileaux (Oglala Lakota) is an esteemed ledger artist and children’s book author who will share insight into his process of writing about the Lakota people’s legends.
Montileaux was born in Pine Ridge, SD. He received his formal art training at the Institute of American Indian Art in Santa Fe, NM. He interned under noted artist Oscar Howe at the University of South Dakota, Vermillion, SD, along with the late Herman Red Elk who became a close personal friend and mentor. He continued to refine his skills and participated in numerous area art shows and many prestigious arts shows nationally.
Turtle Soup is a weekly lunch and learn program with revolving topics ranging from Speakers cover a broad range of intriguing topics, from Indigenous Feminism to Deadwood Archaeology and beyond. Each presentation starts with lunch being served at 11:45 PM, followed by a presentation at 12 PM. The local non-profit Fork Real Café partners with The Journey Museum & Learning Center to provide two weekly varieties of soup including a vegetarian option. Immediately following the presentation, a discussion will be held regarding that topic.
