Turtle Soup | The Vore Buffalo Jump Site - Jacqueline Wyatt

  • Journey Museum 222 New York Street Rapid City, SD, 57701 United States (map)

The Vore Buffalo Jump is one of the most important archaeological sites of the Late-Prehistoric Plains hunters. Excavations at the site have revealed that thousands of bison were killed and butchered in the Vore Site sinkhole in 22 hunts during the period from about 1550 to about 1800.

This talk will take you on a virtual tour of the Vore Site, which was used during a time when the way of life of Native American tribes on the Plains was changing and mass bison kills were becoming obsolete. The Vore Site bone middens shed light on butchering at mass kill sites, provide a record of the stone-to-steel tool transition, and preserve the skeletons of some of the dogs that were beasts of burden in this pre-horse era.

The Vore Site is open to the public during the summer months. The VBJF field trip program, which is geared to 4th graders, hosts around 900 students a year from schools around the region.

Jacqueline Wyatt is the president of the board of the non-profit that manages the Vore Buffalo Jump Archaeological Site. She became a member of the VBJF advisory board in 2010 and was elected president of the VBJF board in 2013. The members of the all-volunteer VBJF board are responsible for educational programs, creation of exhibits, and ensuring that funding is obtained to continue research on the Vore collection, which is stored in the University of Wyoming Archaeological Repository.

Jacqueline has undergraduate degrees from the University of Wyoming and a PhD in chemistry from the University of California Berkeley. She works as a free-lance scientific editor.
