STEAM Saturdays: Geology of the Black Hills

  • Journey Museum & Learning Center 222 New York Street Rapid City, SD, 57701 United States (map)

Hello, young adventurers! We will dive into the exciting world of the Black Hills in South Dakota, where five amazing geologic areas come together like pieces of a giant puzzle. First up is the Hogback, a ridge with steep, dramatic slopes that look like the back of a hog! Next, we explore the Red Valley, known for its vibrant red rocks and stunning views. Then, there are the Minnelusa Foothills, where gentle hills meet the larger mountains. Don’t miss the Limestone Plateau and Belt, a flat area with lots of cool, old limestone rocks. Finally, we’ll check out the Central Core, the heart of the Black Hills, where you’ll find some of the oldest rocks around. Each of these special areas has its own story to tell, making the Black Hills a truly amazing place to learn about!

Two program times are available, 10:30 AM and 1:30 PM. Programs are intended for elementary and middle school age groups. Parents are welcome but not necessary for students ages 8 and above but are required for students under 8.

STEAM is FREE for museum members or included with admission for non-members.
